Thinking OUTSIDE the ShelterBox

A request by the Rotary Club of Charlottesville

On June 10, 2009 we heard a great presentation about ShelterBox by Wayne Chiles of the RC Springfield Virginia. During his talk he mentioned that Rotary International does not make any Matching Grant Funding for this international ShelterBox project. The reason he gave was that RI required all the Matching Grants to be planned in advance through Rotary International and the local Rotary Club receiving the service. Obviously in these emergencies this is not possible.

Our request is to get Rotary International to think outside the box. Get RI to establish a new Matching Grants procedure that would allow for funding to be granted AFTER THE FACT, providing that all the criteria required for Matching Grants were met and documented. That way the expanded funding available through RI would allow for multiples of ShelterBoxes to be funded and READY to GO for the next disaster.

[This idea was submitted on August 25, 2009 to our District Governor.]

By the way, our club has donated money in the traditional way for a shelter box. You can track the box’s progress at www.shelterbox.org . Our box is #6272.
